Green Thumb?

Work in Progress Last year I had a separate blog concentrating on family activities, going green, simplifying, cooking etc. I know a few of you out there were readers. It was a project dear to my heart but after several months I shut it down. My mom got diagnosed with cancer and I was too emotionally spent to maintain two blogs.

One thing I blogged about last summer was my daughter and I attempting gardening. Based on recommendations we did the Square Foot Gardening method. We got our box, prepared the soil as directed and planted seeds. They sprouted quickly and grew ... up until a point then nothing. No vegetables, no harvest. Since we had good soil, temperatures and moisture, I'm chalking it up to sunlight. We live in the woods. I killed the grass and put this little garden right on our yard. It was very sunny early in the summer when I scouted the location. However by late summer when we planted, there were numerous cloudy and rainy days. Even afternoons clouding up can be problematic. What now? I'm still going to give it another try. I am hoping this area will do better with a spring planting. If all goes well then I will keep looking for sunny areas and dig up more of my yard. After years of trying to keep a manicured lawn, my husband and I just don't care. We are tired of fighting nature, putting toxins on the yard and using up valuable water.

I'll keep you updated.

That looks ideal for me! I might just try that this year, too. Hopefully our worms will have some awesome casting ready by then!

You live in the woods?

Not a whole lot of traffic? Not a whole lot of nosy people?

Perhaps you'll let me plant something? If you get my Dexter like drift?

Ahhhh... I'm kidding around.

I think it's super. My herb plant in my kitchen is still thriving. It's nice to snip off some fresh herbs and make a meal. This summer I am planting a garden and also want to plant some berry bushes.

Sorry the first attempt didn't go well. Good luck this year! I'm currently trying to figure out what part of my yard to dig up. The front gets the best sun, but my husband isn't ready to give up his lovely yard... sigh.
